Gender - The personal traits and social positions that members of society attach to being male or female.
In Jay and Gloria's household, Jay is the businessman who makes the money, and Gloria is the one to stay at home and take care of the house and do the cooking. This is a common view in society of men being the one to provide for their families. Gender roles can also be found in Cam and Mitchell's relationship where Cam assumes the female position as being a stay at home parent, and Mitchell as the lawyer who makes the money for the family.

This concept is demonstrated all throughout the series, as each of the three separate families in the show all live in a very upper class suburb with nice homes. This coorelates very well with how other countries perceive the standards of living found in North America.

The manifest function of Jay's dog, Stella, is to serve as a companion for him and as a family pet overall. This is the dogs intended purpose. This relates to society in general, because most people who own pets get them to serve as companions.

Gloria, part of the Pritchett family, is originally from Colombia. Throughout the show she mentions how the United States is so much better than where she is from. Her perspective on her birthplace is viewed differently when she compares it to the U.S. Today, many people have different perspectives depending on where they are from.

This is seen as unrecognized because a normal young child would not do any of those things.
